The innocent imprisoned
Wednesday, May 28th, 2008I want to share with you something that has happened that is very close to my heart. I’ve mentioned before that I am a Baha’i. Since the beginning of the Baha’i Faith, Baha’is in Iran have been persecuted and many have even been killed for their beliefs. This persecution continues today and, a couple of weeks ago, 6 Baha’is were imprisoned. CNN ran a story about it here and you can read more about the latest developments on the story here. Please take a moment to read about this. If you’d like to help, you can send your prayers to them, share this story with others, and write to your representatives. Below is the letter I sent to my representatives a couple of weeks ago.
For those of you who’ve been to my shows, you know that I often sing a song I wrote about this subject. I’ve pasted a video of it below. Please listen, read, and do what you feel moved to in order to help. Thanks for your attention to this.
Lyrics to “Run Away” by Laura Harley
They came to get you; took you away
Tortured and pushed you
You breathe and pray
No end to the pain now, but you’re not afraid
You see your Beloved
Last breath and pray
And I can hear you now, those last words in your heart
They can’t break you with all their lies
And they can kill you, they can take it all away
It only brings you more alive
So run, run away
Run to the One you love more than anything
She tries to find you; she’s so afraid
She knows the real truth
She falls and prays
And so you died, to live a martyr’s life
And I will try to live like you died
Dear Congressman Ellison,
I am a member of the Baha’i Faith and I am writing with serious concerns about the ill treatment of Baha’is in Iran. I would first like to please urge you to co-sponsor House Resolution 1008 which condemns the government of Iran for its state-sponsored persecution of Baha’is; calls on the government of Iran to immediately cease activities aimed at the repression of the Iranian Baha’i community; and continues to hold the government of Iran responsible for upholding all the rights of its nationals, including members of the Baha’i community. Please urge the House to pass this resolution.
I am especially concerned about the Bahá’í leaders just imprisoned on May 14. Six of them were taken from their homes in the middle of the night yesterday, May 14, by Iranian intelligence officials and transported to Evin prison in Tehran. This action reminds me of the Iranian government’s actions in 1980 and 1981, when all but one member of two successive national Bahá’í governing bodies, were imprisoned and executed.
I deeply fear for my dear co-religionists in Iran. I feel so grateful to live in a country where I am free to practice my religion and to be safe. It is my prayer that as my representative, you will look into these concerns and support the safety of these dear and innocent people.
Thank you so much for all you do to serve our community.
Sincerely,
Laura Harley
