Send Me A Sign
Recently I wrote a song called “Send Me A Sign”. It’s all about feeling called to do something in life but being unsure as to how to accomplish it. It’s about calling out for help when you feel lost and long to do something that feels elusive. Sometimes you try so hard and still feel like you’re at a dead end and if God could just whisper the answer in your ear…
So, I played this song for my producer, Jarome Matthew, when I was in Vancouver recording with him. I’m thinking about putting it on the next album. As I was playing it for him, I realized he brought out his camera and taped it! So, it’s sort of rough and spontaneous….and I’m such a perfectionist that it takes courage for me to show you an unfinished product…..but that’s what this blog is all about. So without further ado, here I am playing the song (lyrics are below)…
Send Me A Sign
by Laura Harley
You’ve given me
Ideas and rhymes and melodies
And every line
I write is drawing you to me
But is this where it ends
How do I reach out
I’ve reached a dead end
Send me a sign
Make me feel something
Whisper the way in my dreams
Been looking so long
That I lost my way
Send me the answer I need
Who do you want me to be
Because I long to be who you want me to be
Trying to trust
But time’s running out and I can’t tell
Would you give me
All this to keep it for myself
Don’t let me miss the chance to be
Don’t let me miss the point
I’m terrified I’ll miss my chance
And fall short of all your hopes
You’ve given me
Ideas and rhymes and melodies
Would you give me
All this to keep it just for me

Unfortunately, I’m unable to see the video right now. I’ll try to fix that. However, the lyrics are amazing and they really touch home. I’m silently clapping for you in my cube.

Kirsten, Alicia, and Will, Thanks so much for your feedback!! I am so happy you are liking the song and can identify with it. Woo-hoo! It’s looking like this one may just make it on the next album :). Thanks SO much for your kind encouragement—means a lot!

I agree - this song needs to be on the album! This preliminary version is already awesome. I can identify with it too. And not just cuz we’re related. Also, I’m amazed by your composure with not only moving on after you noticed the camera but making it impossible to detect that you noticed it. If it were me, I would stop suddenly and shriek, “I’ve been PUNK’D!!!” or “This ain’t candid camera, homie!”

Yay, glad you like it, Erin! And you are too funny, I can totally see you saying those things if you got taped. Maybe I’ll have to try taping you sometime so I can see your reaction….watch out, missy!

As much as I would usually cringe at the idea an artist posting a demo of an unfinished song, this song is so brilliant even in it’s raw form that I think it’s great you put it up. Laura. It’s shows how talented you are without any production or recording trickery…
